Abstract

This research aimed to evaluate the performance of organic anti-corrosive coatings prepared with natural pigments that are not harmful to the environment or human health. To achieve the proposed objectives, a test station was installed in the marine atmosphere approximately 20 m from the shoreline. A set of samples in the form of AISI 1010 commercial structural steel plates, measuring 150 mm x 100 mm x 1 mm, were placed in the station and exposed to the marine atmosphere of the Buenos Aires Beach Resort, Víctor Larco Herrera District, Trujillo, Peru. The coatings applied to the steel substrate contained anticorrosive pigments such as: commercial zinc chromate, commercial zinc phosphate, zinc tannate TZn3 (containing 38.60% zinc by weight), and zinc tannate TZn4 (containing 47.13% zinc by weight). Finally, the behavior of the coatings was evaluated using various parameters such as blistering, rust, cracking, chalking, and scaling, according to ISO 4628 and ASTM D 714 standards. The results show that the organic coating used provides significant protection against corrosion to the steel substrate area. However, incisions revealed that corrosion progressively increased over time. Therefore, the use of these organic coatings mitigated corrosion and thus minimized environmental contamination, helping to protect human health.
